Azelio hosted Region Västra Götaland at its Åmål Development Centre on April 29th. The visit provided an opportunity for representatives of Sweden’s leading region for industry and transportation to tour the facilities, and discuss the benefits of clean energy storage for the west of Sweden and beyond.
Region Västra Götaland is responsible for the growth and development of an area which is home to approximately 1.6 million residents and encompasses 49 Swedish municipalities. The region’s largest city, Gothenburg, is also the location of Azelio’s headquarters.
Azelio’s Åmål development centre is a key facility at the heart of its business. The development of the company’s engine and software – as well as all operational testing activities – are carried out here. The visiting party enjoyed a tour of the centre, before receiving an introduction to Azelio’s long-duration energy storage TES.POD solution from the company’s CTO, Torbjörn Lindquist.
Charging from renewable sources such as solar and wind, Azelio’s system stores clean energy as heat in a recycled aluminium alloy, which is dispatchable on demand as electricity and heat with zero emissions.
“It was great to talk about how thermal storage can unlock new potential for Västra Götaland. By storing renewable energy for longer periods, you can make it available after the wind and sun have disappeared, to supply affordable clean power whenever it’s needed. We look forward to continuing our productive discussions with Region Västra Götaland,” said Torbjörn Lindquist.
Madeleine Jonsson, Local Politician Swedish Environmental Party (Miljöpartiet), attended the visit and added: “Inspiring to see first hand the disruptive technology that really can make fossil energy obsolete. The technology is here. Now it’s up to politicians and companies to prioritise and invest to make a scalable, stable and fair energy transition a reality to reach the Paris Agreement.”
